I love to shop. I have to admit though that with the variety of available products nowadays, both local and foreign, sometimes it can be hard to discriminate between the ones that are of high quality and those that are not. Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone help us with that?
That is exactly what Taiwan did when its Bureau of Foreign Trade of Taiwan (BOFT) and Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) organized and implemented the Taiwan Excellence Campaign. This is a campaign that “recognizes high-quality Taiwanese brands, guaranteeing their superior quality and value” in an effort to help Filipinos identify the best Taiwanese products.
How It Started
In the 1980’s, the Ministry of Economic Affair (MOEA) developed a 5 year plan to raise Taiwan’s international competitiveness by supporting its local brands. The Taiwan Excellence campaign became a part of that under the Image Enhancement plan in 1992. Brands and products were awarded the “Taiwan Excellence” seal based on R&D, design, quality and marketing efforts.
The Process
To ensure the quality of the products that will be awarded, they have to first go through a rigorous screening process. Only those that can proudly represent the unique and innovative culture of Taiwan will be selected.
All Taiwan based brands are eligible to be part of the campaign and they can fall under any of these categories: consumer and business IT, fashion, arts and culture, sports, education, transportation, and others.
Scoring of each product is based on its R&D, design, quality, and marketing by an international panel of judges. Each product must score evenly in all four categories. Only those selected are allowed to carry the Taiwan Excellence Seal.
The judges then choose, from among those selected, those who deserve the Silver and Gold Award recognition. Only ten will be given the Gold Award, the highest recognition under the campaign, while the remaining finalists will be given the Silver Award.
Taiwan Excellence in the Philippines
The campaign was introduced to the Philippines for the first time in 2014 to benefit Filipino consumers who purchase products from Taiwan. The campaign carried the theme “Excellent Lifestyle” not just to showcase the 56 excellent brands under Taiwan Excellence, but to also let Filipinos recognize how these products enable them to enjoy an excellent lifestyle.
These brands will be bringing in 175 products which fall under different industries such as information and communications technologies (ICT), home and living, and sports & leisure. Some of the brands under the campaign include Acer, Asus, HTC, Tatung, BenQ, Draytek, KingCom, KW Trio, Kymco, MSI Silicon Power, Sym, Transcend and others.
I think this is really helpful for consumers like us. In order to find out if a Taiwanese product is of high quality, all we need to do is look for the Taiwan Excellence Seal. It definitely makes shopping for products easier because the seal enables us to make educational purchase decisions fast. It not only helps us discover the best that Taiwan has to offer but it also makes shopping a more enjoyable experience.

This so reminds me of an article I wrote years ago when the community came together to compete against each other on coming up with the most excellent products…to promote local businesses. It helped the region’s economy. This is a great campaign. Jesse Robredo was trying to promote this, too, somehow, although on a different approach.
I can’t remember who, though. He was a Magsaysay awardee. 🙁

I am a believer in this policy of screening products although I doubt it being successfully implemented a hundred percent in the country. We had so many red tapes which include the private sectors. It’s time the government really care for our friends abroad.

This is such a good move from the Taiwanese Trade and Industries. At least this can eliminate even a little low quality products that is so rampant. I am encourage to buy things that are made from Taiwan even more.

Thanks for sharing, Mommy! Now I am more at ease to buy foreign products because of this. Some news told us of these dangerous chemicals placed on foreign things but because of this screening, everything would be safe.

My favorite products from Taiwan are my HTC phones. They are really great quality and had lasted me more than two years and I’m still using them. I cannot say the same for other Taiwan-made items we have. Having a seal of excellence will boost confidence and loyalty to the products we get so I wish this is something that can be implemented worldwide

I didn’t know that KingCom is a Taiwanese brand… all along i thought this was local… but then again, if Taiwan can do this to boost their business, i do hope that our country can have something like this as well in the future… 😀
