Music is a big part of our family life. I grew up singing. I was on the Glee Club in high school and even took some piano lessons. My hubby plays the guitar and sings too. Actually, he was even part of a band back in the day.

It’s no surprise then why our kids love music as well. While none of them play any instrument yet, all three of them love to sing their hearts out. They also like plugging in to their phones or iPads listening to music. We encourage all this because we understand how music can help boost a child’s brain development, including their mental, physical and social aspects.

Experts also agree. Dr. Liz Inciong (a pediatrician, Fellow of the Philippine Pediatric Society and an Associate Active Consultant of the Institute of Pediatrics and Child Health at St. Luke’s Medical Center for 18 years) and Teacher Marah Vasquez-Estuesta of Kindermusik International are among those who have scientific understanding of the matter and strongly support it.

According to these experts, music helps kids become more perceptive to sound and develop into astute listeners. It works even for kids as young as four years old. Early exposure to music hones their speech and language development, motor and rhythmic coordination and even their social skills. Kids don’t even need to play an instrument to reap the benefits. Active listening to songs is actually enough and might encourage them to pick up an instrument and play.

PPSG M.I. Beats

Dr. Inciong and Teacher Marah have partnered with PROGRESS PRE-SCHOOL GOLD, in an effort to address this opportunity of harnessing music for learning. Together, they created the first ever playlists, called M.I. Beats, based on scientific research and practical applications,  designed to help build Multiple Intelligence in the Philippines.

All the songs were specially handpicked and were tried and tested with their students. Three playlists were created to help enhance Brain Smarts (mental development), Body Smarts (physical development), and People Smarts (Social and Emotional Development).

Brain Smarts – songs that highlight linguistic development through vocabulary building, phonemic awareness and vocal development as a way to develop oral language and speak rhythmically and expressively

  1. Music, too, is a big part of our life. Safe to say that it is what binds us. Husband and I met at the church as we are both choir members. First born and second son occasionally play piano at the church. Second son is also into learning the guitar, perhaps he is seeing too much of his father playing it too. Our big bunso is part of his school’s teatro and they sing every First Friday at school. As for my baby, he would listen intently and even jam with me as I sing to him.

We all love music and I thank music of making the small house lively.
