Roller skating is making a huge comeback! Most of us still remember visiting the skating rink and skating to disco music years ago. While modern rinks don’t have the disco flare, they are now easy to find and offer the same excitement to kids and adult skaters alike.

There is no doubt that roller skating is fun, both as a leisure activity and as an exercise. Your kids will love spending an hour or two at the skating rink with their friends. Before you take them to the rink, however, here are some of the things you need to know.

Protect the Knee

Even experienced skaters fall from time to time. The most important thing is wearing the right safety gear to protect all the right parts. You want to get your children a good pair of elbow and knee pads, as well as skating gloves for maximum protection.

A helmet is also a must. Fortunately, skating safety gear for kids is designed to be colorful and fun. You can even pick up kit with cartoon characters or your children’s favorite Disney princess on it.

Get the Right Pair

The roller skates your children wear will greatly influence their experience with the activity. Not all skates are created equal. There are actually several types of roller skates on the market, from the speed-focused rink skates to the more rugged outdoor skates.

Different types of skates are designed for specific purposes, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be used on other surfaces too. You just have to pick the type that suits what your children will do the most. On top of that, there are parts and accessories you can use to adjust the skates for specific purposes.

Teach Your Kids How to Fall

As ridiculous as this may sound, knowing how to fall correctly will help your children avoid injuries and other potential issues while skating. Yes, there is such a thing as “the right fall” in skating. Falling is an easy thing to learn too.

Make sure your children understand the right posture to maintain while skating. This involves bending the knees slightly and leaning forward to achieve balance while wearing skates. Any fall from this posture should be relatively safe and will not cause any serious injury.

Share the Experience

You want to supervise your kids during the first few visits to the skating rink. When I said you need to share the skating experience, I meant you have to spend some time watching over the kids and ensuring their safety.

Most skating rinks have professional skaters supervising the rink and helping those who are new to roller skating, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get involved. Besides, there is no better excuse for getting those old roller skates out of the attic than supervising the kids and their friends.

After a few tries, your children will absolutely love roller skating. It is a great and healthy activity that keeps the kids entertained and exercising at the same time, and it is definitely worth trying.
