This has been something I’ve been thinking about for several years now. However, I’ve really only given it very serious thought this past year. I’m thinking if I should start homeschooling my daughters, Zoe and Ziya.
The school year is fast approaching. School actually starts in about two weeks already but my daughters haven’t been enrolled yet. With the rising cost of education, homeschooling is really an option that I need to consider. Aside from the tuition fees, the books and school supplies, uniforms and school bus fees already amount to thousands. Bear in mind that I have two daughters so that’s double the cost. Also, since their present school is not exactly nearby, the cost of their private school bus is also astounding, the reason of the bus owner being the rising cost of fuel. Add to that the fact that my daughters will have to wake up at 4:30 am so that they can be ready by the time the bus arrives at 5:30 am. As if that’s not enough to tire them out, they’ll get home around 5:30 p.m. already, just in time for dinner. After dinner, they only have about an hour for homework before they have to go to bed. As a mother, it breaks my heart to see them so tired all the time.
Saying all that makes me think that homeschooling is definitely the better option. The fees are not as high. I will be given all the lesson plans and the books to be used for the entire school year. We can choose when and how long we will study per day. We can go on field trips to make more learning fun. The kids also have the option to join more extra curricular activities that they will enjoy. However, that also means I will really have to be committed to it. The thing is, I’m a very impatient person. I don’t know whether I have what it takes to teach children. I can probably handle teaching the lessons but I tend to get frustrated easily whenever things don’t go right. This also means I will have to stay at home for as long as my kids are homeschooling. I was actually planning on going back to the workforce already. I can’t do that anymore if we choose to homeschool.
At this point, I really don’t know what to do yet. The kids have expressed their interest in homeschooling. Ziya’s happy that there will no longer be rowdy boys bugging her in the classroom. Zoe finds homeschooling interesting. The girls are used to spending most of their time together anyway. They’re also excited about going on more field trips. I’m just not sure they truly understand what’s it like to be homeschooled.
I hope I’ll get to decide soon. Time is running out. If there are any of you out there who are into homeschooling your children, I will appreciate any input from you. Thanks!

  1. I hope you make your decision soon!! We have thought about it so very much recently. With 3 kids in private school, the total is astronomical and then add in their extracurriculars and additional tutoring classes to stay on top of the game and well, we’ve spent a fortune!!

At the same time, I will always wonder if I am doing them a disservice and if I am teaching them enough.

The school they are in DOES NOT waste time and moves at a super fast pace. There were only 2 Kindergarten children this year and my daughter is finishing school at a 2nd grade level for the Summer. Little things like that add up fast.

    Let us know your decision!!

  2. Well we decided to homeschool for several reasons and this coming year 2011-2012 will be our first year, but I can’t see anything else being better. The time they are away from us, the attention I can provide in studies versus a 20:1 student:teacher ratio, the peer pressure and bullying, the homework, so many other reasons. I say if you are thinking about it this seriously it must mean something to you and it must be important…go for it…you can always reassess after the first year.

  3. homeschooling is really a good option. aside from the facts you have mention, you will also get to know more about your kids, your self and hopefully, your relationship will also grow closer, something which is good before your girls become teeners.

there are many homeschool support groups around, depends where you are located, if you are wondering if they will get friends of their age…

i can honestly say that it is worth it. 🙂 like you, before we finally tried homeschooling last year, i have been thinking and interested with homeschooling for a couple of years before hand..

are you able to inquire with DepEd accredited homeschool groups already? if you have any questions, feel free to send me a message or a tweet :)God bless you! May you make the right decision for your kids!

  4. If I were in your place (having children in that situation), I would defiantly home school. I was home schooled back when I was 15/16 (10 years ago), and I personally found it a lot easier to deal with. I have a 5 yr old and a 3 yr old and both are in preschool; my 5 yr old will start kindergarten this year. Having a child wake up at 4:30 is crazy in my opinion. And then having them come home at 5:30 pm.. too me that would be way to long to be away from my girls.

Hope you make a decision soon!

  7. Praise God, your kids want to be homeschooled! That could be a sign already. My advice to you is to, first, pray about it. Ask for God’s leading and wisdom as you decide for the education of your children. Second, do a bit of soul searching and determine what’s your real purpose for deciding to homeschool. Is it just because of financial reason? (Because homeschooling can really be expensive, too.) Or is it something deeper and have a more meaningful and lasting impact? Third, you get to know more about it. You can visit some homeschool sites, inquire from other homeschooling moms, and maybe attend a homeschool orientation. Just remember this: If God calls you to homeschool, He will enable you. Just put your faith in Him.

Incidentally, you may want to visit my blog and read my old post regarding our homeschool beginnings (http://www.anaturalmama.com/2011/02/beginning-of-our-homeschool-journey.html). You may leave a comment there in case you have any question. Praying for you and your family, God bless!

  8. Found your blog through Mom Blog Monday and wanted to say that homeschooling is very rewarding. I’ve homeschooled my 5 children from the beginning. You know the saying “like a bed of roses”, well, homeschooling is like that – some days are more thorny than others but the result is beautiful.
