Look around you this Christmas season and I have no doubt that you’ll see a lot of Christmas lights, Christmas trees, Santa images and gifts everywhere. The malls are full of retailers advertising their Christmas promos, enticing you to buy their products, claiming that they are the best gifts to give to your loved ones. Christmas has truly become so commercialized these past several years and this makes it increasingly challenging to teach our kids the true meaning of Christmas. Most kids these days only look forward to the holidays because of the prospect of receiving tons of gifts not only from their parents but also from godparents, relatives and even Santa.
This year, I wanted to make our family’s Christmas more meaningful by starting new traditions. I figure it’s not yet too late to remind my 11-year-old and 9-year-old daughters the real reason we celebrate Christmas in the first place. My son is also now almost 2 years old and I think it’s time we teach him more things about Jesus. Here’s what we plan to do to remind our kids of Jesus Christ this Christmas.
Read to them The Story of The Birth of Jesus

My daughters have read this story many times before, either at home or in school. We have given them this book called My First Bible Stories and the last part tells of the birth of Jesus. It was through this book that my 1-year-old first learned about the baby Jesus.

This year, however, I want to kick it up a notch by reading to them the story and really discuss with them the details. I want them to be able to realize what kind of a challenge and sacrifice it was for Mary and Joseph to prepare of Jesus’ birth. I want them to realize how scary it must have been for them and how they survived the struggle just by trusting God’s plan. Aside from these, I want them to be able to see the differences of life back then to the life we are living now. Hopefully, that will make them more appreciative of everything they have.
Visit the Ateneo Christmas Parks
We’ve never visited the Ateneo during Christmas before. I think this year is a good time to start doing so. The school opened up its Christmas Park last November 29 with the theme that is close to the hearts of Filipinos – the Belen. They organized a contest in their community to set up a nativity scene or Belen that will showcase the Filipino culture and tradition to represent all the different regions in the country. It’s a great way to not only teach the kids visually about the birth of Jesus but also give them a chance to appreciate what makes our culture rich.
Here are some photos of the Belens showcased in the park.

Sing Christmas Songs

I am not talking about Jingle Bell Rock or I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. Although these are fun songs to sing during the holidays, they don’t really remind us of Christ. My favorite Christmas songs are those that remind us of Jesus and what his birth means for all of us. Some examples are Silent Night, O Holy Night and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. I have visions of us singing these songs while sitting by the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. I think it will be a great bonding activity since we all love to sing.
Create a Non-Material Gift List
I want to remind my kids that it is better to give than to receive. Aside from that, I want them to know that the best gifts are not necessarily the most expensive ones but those that come from the heart. Since my daughters don’t get allowances yet, they don’t really have money to spend for buying gifts. So, I told them to come up with a variation on their gift list. Instead of listing what gift to buy for a specific person, I asked them to list something nice they can do for each person instead. After all, wasn’t Jesus Christ born poor? Yet, he was able to give us the best gift of all – his life.
There are many other ways of keeping Christ in your homes this Christmas. They need not be expensive nor do they need much creativity. The important thing is for you and your family to remember that Jesus Christ is the true reason for celebrating Christmas. Make this holiday season more meaningful by keeping Jesus Christ in your home always.
