Last Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, my family and I went to the Goldilocks 4th Cake Deco Expo at Hall 4, SMX Convention Center. The theme for this year was “Let your imagination fly!” because cake decorating can be more fun when you get your hands dirty and let your imagination run wild.
We were so excited to attend the event because we hadn’t been to the previous expos so this was something new to us. Zoe and Ziya were the most excited, though, because they’re really interested in baking. They were so amazed at the cake display. Goldilocks offers wide array of character cakes for birthday parties and the like.
Ziggy’s favorite was this one with the Cars theme.
I liked this Toy Story-themed cake.
I also like this Angry Birds version. So cute!
As always, the event culminates with the Goldilocks Intercollegiate Cake Decorating Challenge, which is now on it’s 8th year. Ten schools from all over the Philippines competed live on stage decorating, different cakes under a time limit. The schools that participated were Centro Escolar University Manila, La Consolacion College Bacolod, Lipa City Colleges, Lyceum of the Philippines Batangas, Lyceum of the Philippines Laguna, St. Anne Lucena Inc., St. Louis College Valenzuela, STI Fairview, University of the East Manila and Western Institute of Technology Iloilo.
Below are some of the preliminary entries for the cake decorating challenge that were displayed at the event.
Goldilocks also prepared a lot of activities for the young and old alike. One of the first things we tried was the Fly for Hope area. There was a wall section that allowed guests to express themselves by coloring or writing on the wall. Here are Zoe and Ziya doing just that.
Inside the Fly for Hope area, guests were also invited to decorate their own cake art template for a small donation of Php 20.00. All proceeds will go to the Goldilocks Foundation FEED Program. Here we are trying it out.
What we enjoyed the most, though, was the Avoset area, wherein chefs demonstrated how to use their whipped cream products in cake decorating. Here’s one of the chefs doing a demonstration.
All those flowers and leaves were made from just whipped cream. Amazing, right? I love how pretty it turned out!
However, the most fun part, I have to admit, was the Whipped Cream Workshop, wherein guests were asked to imitate a chef doing this – a Snowman decorated cupcake.
I swear it looked so easy to do. How hard could it be, right? Zoe and Ziya tried to do it with the first batch of guests.
Here’s Zoe so intent in her work.
Here’s Ziya who finished fast because she was so excited to it the cupcake!
Here they are with their finished products. Pretty good, huh? One of the chefs even said that Zoe was the best one from their batch.
Of course, I had to try it out too along with the other media people invited. I quickly learned that it wasn’t as easy as it looked.
It was so hard to control the amount of whipped cream to come out! In the end, this was what I came up with. It wasn’t perfect but at least it was decent-looking!
Aside from these activities, there was also a Goldilocks DYC Cake booth, wherein guests got a chance to decorate their own cakes.
The program, which consisted of a series of fun games for the guests, was hosted by popular radio DJs Chico and Delamar.
It was truly a fun Goldi-good day filled with great activities for the whole family!
