I have always loved writing ever since I was a kid. So, it’s actually kind of weird why I only decided to make writing a serious money-making venture last year. I so love being a freelance writer and have very high hopes of becoming a really successful one someday. However, before that happens, I still have a lot to learn and learn is what I’m doing right now.
I’ve been thinking a lot about my profession lately. I’ve been doing a lot of writing but I’ve been doing virtual assistance and social media management too. While being a virtual assistant is, I think, something I’m good at, doing administrative work doesn’t really give me as much excitement as writing does. Doing social media is, on the other hand, really fun but also very time consuming and a lot of hard work. While I like doing these things, I must admit that writing is one of my first loves.
With that in mind, I’ve decided that I should focus more on improving my writing skills and on finding more writing opportunities so that I can be the best in what I do. Of course, one way to improve is to learn. So, I grabbed the opportunity to take this free writing course in Coursera.org called Crafting an Effective Writer: Tools of the Trade.
Coursera.org is a company that partners with colleges and universities around the world to come up with various courses to offer for FREE to anyone who wants to learn. Yup, they’re for FREE. Isn’t that great? For a WAHM like me who stays at home most of the week, online is really the perfect place for me to learn. I’m so excited about this learning opportunity because not only is this the first class I’m taking from Coursera, it’s also my first online class ever!
This particular class, which will last for 5 weeks, will actually take me to the very basics of writing, which I think is something every newbie writer should brush up on. The class started only a few days ago and I’ve already finished all the assigned readings and other required work for the entire Week 1! Excited much? I can hardly wait to start on Week 2.
Since this class is going to take up some of my time during the week, I expect that it will take time away from my blogging. So, if I won’t be blogging much this next four weeks, you’ll know it’s because I’m not only busy working but also busy taking classes. I hope, whatever your profession is in life, this inspires you to continue learning as well. After all, there’s always room for improvement.
Hi,
This was a very helpful article! I was looking around the web for people who has taken some Coursera courses. A couple of questions though.
1. Have you finished this course?
2. How was it able to help you? Was it an effective tool in improving your skills?
3. Would you know if I can include this on my resume?
I wanted to improve my skills kase, I studied at a not-so-popular schoold. I graduated with an education degree pero I haven’t pursued teaching pa, but I have plans to. Currently, Im working for a BPO company tapos nag freelance writing din ako on the side, I’ve been doing this for almost a year na din and I wanted to improve on my craft pa, so I can offer more and be competent na din. I hope you can get back to me on this. Thank you in advance!! 🙂
Hi Kyle. I wish I can give you helpful feedback about the course but unfortunately I was unable to finish it because of my really hectic work schedule. However, I do know that this course is very popular in Coursera. In fact, I think they have re-offered this twice already because a lot of people are clamoring for it. Hope you get to try it. It’s for free anyway. Good luck on your freelance writing journey! 🙂
