I have so many plans for this blog. I’ve also said that many times already. However, the truth is, thinking about all those plans can be quite overwhelming. Sometimes even when you know your end goal, it’s hard to figure out how to get there. That is why when my friend and mentor, Martine, of the Dainty Mom blog, announced that she would be holding a creative writing workshop for mom bloggers, I readily registered.
The first of the series of workshops happened back in May. I wasn’t able to blog about it but it was really helpful to me in terms of unleashing something inside of me that has been wanting to come out for so long. Our assignment for that workshop was to write a post about our fears, dreams or hopes as a mother using one of the Story types we learned. The product of that was the most revealing blog post I’ve ever written so far, which is about Our New Normal. It was a very emotional piece for me to write. But like what Martine told me, we should “bleed” when we write. Oh, I was bleeding, alright!
Anyway, I loved that first workshop so much that I, of course, decided to attend the second one last June 22, entitled “Write On Mom: Thinking Editorially”. It was meant to teach attendees how to be the editor-in-chief of their business, brand or blog, with the primary goal of being able to craft our site’s About Page.
The workshop was held at La Creperie in San Juan, which is this dainty little cafe that serves more than just delicious crepes. Just look at our menu below! I was so intent on the workshop, though, that I wasn’t really able to take photos of the food, but I assure you, they were yummy.
Anyway, since it was supposed to be a writing workshop I expected to do some writing. So, I was surprised to learn that the first thing on the agenda was to do some arts and crafts. What? I am so not an arts and crafts person but I was still game to try because what Martine actually wanted us to do was to make a mood board for our blogs. She asked us to browse thru the magazines she brought and pick photos that make us happy. I was actually so excited because I had never done a mood board before though I’ve always wanted to.
I’m actually pretty happy with what I came up with. As expected, most of the photos I chose were colored purple. Isn’t it already evident in this blog that purple is my favorite color? Well, because of this mood board, I was able to visualize more what I want this blog to look like after I have it made over (soon, I hope!). Don’t you think it looks so me?
We were asked to explain why we chose those photos. I said I like them because the color combinations of purple, black, gray and green, represent not just the girly side of me but also the tough chick in me as well. I chose the photos with the word LOVE because I love “LOVE” and that is something I’m focusing on in my life right now.
Who would have thought this mood board can also help me pinpoint who I want my main audience of this blog to be? And who would have thought that it would also help me craft a better About Me page? Well, obviously, Martine did. Haha! That’s exactly what this whole workshop did for me.
While I write for moms and WAHMs in general, I now know that I want to write for that woman who, like me, has gone through so many challenges in life but is still standing and fighting to live life the best way she possibly can. I want to write for that woman who struggled with life’s ups and downs but SURVIVED. I want to write for the fighters, the ones who never give up. I want to write for the dreamers like me, who strive to make her dreams come true each day. With that in mind, my new About Page was born. Do check it out and tell me what you think.
This workshop was such an eye-opener. I’m sure all of the other ladies who attended the workshop with me will attest to that too. Why not join us next time?
