My Ziggy is super obsessed with toy cars, buses and most especially trucks. Last year, when he was only 2 years old, he could already distinguish among the different types of trucks. I didn’t even know what some of them were called until hubby and I began buying books about them to read to Ziggy.
Hubby and I support Ziggy’s love for vehicles so we have been buying him a whole LOT ofv ehicle-themed toys and books. His most favorite vehicles though are the rescue ones, such as fire trucks, police trucks and ambulances. So, when I was presented with an opportunity to review a movie app that features all these vehicles and more, how could I have said “no”?
Now let me tell you all about it.
Heroes of the City
Heroes of the City is a television cartoon about rescue vehicles in a small town where everyone can be a hero! It was created by Ruta Ett DVD AB.
In this cartoon, kids can follow the fantastically exciting adventures along with friends in town. They’ll get to meet Paulie Police Car and Fiona Fire Engine as they help the townspeople find thieves, put out fires, and solve one of the many mysteries that happen in the otherwise quiet town. They will also get to know Calamity Crow, the most unlucky bird in town.
Emphasizing friendship, Heroes of the City contains a great deal of warmth and what may be accomplished by helping each other. The cartoon is primarily targeted at children age 3 – 7.

The Verdict:
I was given a link to download the Heroes of the City movie app. Prior to this, we have not heard nor seen any Heroes of the City episode. I decided to download the app on Ziggy’s Android tablet where he has other educational videos and games. It took quite a few minutes (more than 10 minutes) to download the app, but I guess the download speed will depend on ones Internet connection. Otherwise, there were no problems.
After downloading, I proceeded to show the app to Ziggy and he was so excited that he jumped up and down, hugged me and said, “Thank you, Mommy! I love you, Mommy!”. No kidding. That was how excited he was. Then off he went with the tab, placed in on the table and proceeded to try and figure out how to operate it. This was Ziggy during his first time to use the app.
When the app starts you’ll see a couple of the characters and really nice music (which I am guessing is the theme music from the cartoon) immediately starts playing. The next screen will give you choices to click either Movies, Games or Trophies. We tried tapping on Games and Trophies but unfortunately, nothing happened. It’s either there was something wrong with the download or I was only given a link that only allows playing of the movies.
When we clicked “Movies” though, we were given a really nice selection of videos, which looks like this. This is a photo of the app being played on Ziggy’s tablet. There are 26 movies in all. Your kid can just tap any of the movie icons and it will play automatically. But there’s also a “play all” setting that you can choose.
I am personally very pleased with the movie selections. Aside from the fact that it gives the kid a lot of choices, the themes are really child-friendly too. They’re easy enough for a little kid to understand (Ziggy just turned 3 a week ago). The graphics are nice and colorful. The movies also don’t take too long, mostly just 14 minutes long.
Here are some photos I took of the app while a movie was playing. (Sorry, the tablet doesn’t have a screen cap feature!)
At the same time, they teach valuable lessons such as teamwork, hard work, dedication and lending a helping hand, among others. This is very important to me because we screen everything that Ziggy watches and make sure that they’re all not just age-appropriate but educational too.
Now, your kid can watch any of these videos provided that you have an Internet connection. However, the great thing about this app is that it allows you to download the movies to your device. Doing so will allow your kid to watch the videos any time he wants, even without Internet. So, I tried downloading a few to Ziggy’s tablet, which worked just fine, except that the download took no less than 15 minutes each.
Oh, and by the way, just in case your child doesn’t understand English, this app plays in multiple languages too. Aside from English, the app can play on Swedish, Russian, Polish, Thai, Korean, Dutch, Italian, Czech and Hungarian languages too.
Overall, we’re very happy with this app. Ziggy loves watching the movies. He has his favorite ones already! I only wish we got to try the games too. I definitely recommend this app for kids, though, especially to those who love rescue vehicles just like Ziggy. So, for those of you who are interested, go download it now. It’s for free! 🙂 Let me know how you like it.
Oh and by the way, do stay tuned because I also just might do a Heroes of the City giveaway!
