Lately, I’ve been thinking about improving my home. One of the biggest changes I’d like to do is  to add an extension on to my house. In particular, I’d love a back garden with a conservatory.

Where I’m thinking of building, the sun catches the garden beautifully. It would be perfect in the summer but unfortunately, building one isn’t a possibility at the moment since we live in a second floor apartment with no garden. But it’s still fun to dream about it and so I’ve been looking online to find out what you need to think about when you build an extension to your house. With the information I gathered I’ve formulated this guide that’s sure to help homeowners in the situation who want to build the extension themselves.

Price Check

The first thing that I suggest you do is to find out how much it is going to cost. Don’t worry about furnishing the new room just yet. You should only be thinking about the cost of the building work. You need to think about everything you need to do and how you can make things cheaper. I suggest you speak to a number of different contractors and get a feel for the price. That way you can make sure that you will be able to afford it.

Get Permission

Your next step is to get permission for the extension. Usually, you need to get permission from the local barangay to build an extension. This is always important if the extension will either affect other homeowners or change the aesthetic of your house. You will usually find requests are granted if the extension isn’t too obtrusive.

Ready The Land

Usually, it takes some time for your plans to be accepted or rejected. Once that happens you can start preparing the land to build on. You can’t just build an extension on the land as it is. It needs to be prepared. You may need to consider a mini excavator hire. Preparing the land is quite an extensive job, and it will be a lot of work without the proper machinery. A mini excavator is also perfect if you’re going to be working in quite a compact space. If you don’t know how to work one of these, you can also hire an equipment operator to man it for you.

Building The Extension

When the land has been prepared, you can start the building work. You might want to get involved with this job yourself but you should always have professional help. A poorly made extension can severely reduce the value of your property. You need to make sure that you are not missing out any important details. If you think the building work is going to be disruptive you may want to alert your neighbors. Give them the chance to clear out their home for a couple of days or prepare themselves.

Electric And Plumbing

Finally, the most complex job is adding the extension to the electric and plumbing systems. It’s best to leave this to the experts and not try to do it yourself. The job can be dangerous, and if things go wrong, it could also mean an expensive repair.
