Watercolor Workshop at The Crafter’s Marketplace

Since my One Word for the year has been “CREATE”, I’ve been actively looking for opportunities to do just that. So, when the opportunity came for me to take a basic watercolor workshop through Mommy Bloggers Philippines, you bet I signed up immediately.

The workshop I’m talking about took place last July 30, 2016 and was organized by The Crafter’s Marketplace, located at Rustan’s Grocery at the Shangri-la Plaza Mall. They actually organized the workshop in partnership with Trend Micro Philippines, who has been conducting workshops and talks on Internet Safety for Kids and Families for the past several years. This year, they’ve partnered together to bring positive reinforcement that there are lots of other activities that families can engage in instead of just using the Internet. One of those of course, is watercolor painting.

On that day, my friend May (of Fullyhousewifed.com) and I arrived at the venue with time to spare. So, we were able to explore what The Crafter’s Marketplace offers in their small shop. Here’s some of the things you can find.

It’s definitely a haven for crafters and planner addicts like me! I didn’t buy anything there that day but for sure, I’m going to come back there in the near future to hoard some of their stuff.

The workshop area was in this space just a few steps away from the store. There were two sessions for mommy bloggers that day and May and I were part of the one that took place in the morning. There were only 6 of us there.

This is what greeted us on the table when we arrived.

Our instructor that day was Mr. Ian De Jesus (@ravenfox13), whom I found to be very knowledgeable about the craft and was very generous about sharing a lot of information that were helpful to newbies like us.

Among the things he shared with us are the different types of paints and brushes commonly used for watercolor painting.

Before the actual painting session, Ian really took time to teach us about Color Theory. I’ve heard of it before and had a bit of an understanding already but Ian made the concept a lot clearer for me. I realized that in order to be able to paint beautifully, a good understanding about color theory is a must.

The first thing he actually asked us to do was to make our own color wheel, which helped us better understand the relationships among the different color hues.

Here’s May painting a wreath. I couldn’t help but compare my work with hers and I have to say, hers is a whole lot better. I need more practice in order to come up with work half as nice as what she was able to accomplish that day.

Below are the paintings I was able to make during the half day workshop, including the giveaway given to us by The Crafter’s Marketplace. This was my first ever watercolor workshop, so I’m pretty pleased with what I was able to make.

I really, really enjoyed the session. I only wish I can attend more so that I can do more.

I’ve already taught my kids what I’ve learned and it was a really great bonding activity for us. I hope we can actually attend a class together someday.
