One of the things that most parents have trouble with is teaching their kids to eat fruits and vegetables. Somehow, kids these days grow up thinking that fruits and veggies are yucky. What’s a mom to do? In our house, we also experience the same dilemma. Although my girls do eat fruits and veggies, they are still picky about which kinds. It’s totally different for my son, who at 1 year and 5 months, will eat practically anything. So, when I was given an opportunity to review a DVD that is supposed to encourage healthy eating to kids, I was immediately interested.
Copy Kids Eat Fruits and Vegetables DVD
Copy Kids is a media company that produces videos that encourage positive habits in kids by letting them watch and copy other kids. This series is designed for children 6 months to 5 years old. My Review
I did not know what to expect to see in the video when I received a copy of the DVD. So, when I watched it and saw that it was full of kids eating and enjoying fruits and vegetables I was quite surprised. There was no music to sing to or dance along with, which is what I’m used to seeing in children’s videos. The strategy used was really simple. However, if you think about it, it really makes sense. Kids do love copying other kids. I see that a lot whenever my son copies his older sisters.
The first time I showed my son the video he wasn’t really paying that much attention because we were in the car using a portable DVD player. I tried again at home by plopping him in front of the TV. Being only 17 months, he couldn’t sit still for too long so I had to show just one episode at a time. He was really amused by the kids on the video and he would laugh and squeal when they did too. Since he does eat fruits and vegetables, there was no problem letting him copy the kids. Aside from that, though, one of the nicest things he’s learned while watching the video was to say the word “vegetables”. Okay, it sounds more like “‘tabos” but he’s only 17 months old.
What really surprised me though was how the video affected my daughters. I wasn’t expecting it to have a positive effect on them at all since they are already 10 and 9 years old, well beyond the target age range of the video. However, they loved the video! They were shocked to see little kids eating and loving raw vegetables. I think they were a bit embarrassed to see kids younger than themselves do that. They were embarrassed enough that they started eating the bell peppers on their pizza last weekend, which is something they’ve never done before. They have also requested me to let them bring more fruits to snack on in school instead of their usual cookies and crackers.
I definitely recommend this video to parents. Just bear in mind though that in some kids it might take several times of video watching before you can see any changes. Some kids, such as my 4-year-old nephew, screamed “Eww! Eww!” when he watched the video. He has always been a very picky eater so I guess, it will take longer for him to change his mind.
