Ziya and I just ended our second week of homeschool last Friday. So far, so good, I think. We have pretty much gotten used to our schedule by now. We were able to follow it most of the time. The only times we veered away from the schedule was when we decided to study other subjects in place of Science because her Science textbook was not available yet. We also relaxed our Friday schedule because there was a storm and Zoe was home because classes got called off.
I’m pretty proud of what we have accomplished so far. For most of the subjects, we are already on the third lesson. The only teaching challenge I have encountered this week was teaching Ziya the Roman Numerals. She already understands the basic rules and can do the roman numerals easily for the two digit numbers. However, she finds it difficult to do so when it comes to three digit to four digit numbers. It was really frustrating on my part and I guess, for her too. I am not a patient person and so it was super hard to maintain my cool. Yesterday though, Kai gave it a try and taught Ziya a different way of doing it.  Hopefully that will help. This is a real learning experience for me too since I’m constantly trying to figure out how best to teach Ziya the lessons so that she can really understand them.
I was also trying to find ideas for Ziya’ P.E. subject since we haven’t really done anything on that yet. It was a good thing that we met up with the school directress yesterday. She finally gave me the lesson plan that should be followed, including which exercises Ziya should do in the book. Also, she suggested that we let Ziya come to school on Fridays so that she can attend the P.E. classes as well as the weekly recognition day. I agreed to that because that will also give Ziya the chance to still see her school friends. The directress also gave me two options on how Ziya’s grades can be computed. The first option is for me to do all the lessons, facilitate the exercises and check all Ziya’s work. The only thing the school will do is to record the grades. The second option involves them doing the checking and recording. I chose the second option although I still do need to check Ziya’s work so that I will know if she’s learning the lesson or not.
It was a pretty good week if I do say so myself though we are still in the exploratory stage. I’ve been doing a lot of research too online for other resources and was really happy to come across the Homeschool Lounge, which is a site for other homeschool moms and dads. They have all sorts of resources and ideas for activities. I also get to connect with the parents. I’m really excited to learn from the experts! I also downloaded the Homeschoolbar, which is a toolbar that makes it easier for you to connect to other homeschool blogs and resources. So cool! I’ll definitely blog about everything I will discover with this toolbar. Stay tuned for that!
