Last March, I posted a product review on this entertaining and educational app called Heroes of the City. If you missed the review, you can go read it by clicking here and here.
That Heroes of the City app was actually made for children 2 – 6 years old. It’s a really great app that Ziggy loves and keeps using until now. It’s so great that Ruta Ett, the developer of the app, has come up with another version now specifically made for the younger ones ages 0 – 2++ years old, called Heroes of the City Baby.
Here’s some info about the app.
Just like the original version, Heroes of the City Baby features the lovable characters of the Heroes of the City cartoons. In this app, your child can play games and watch movies together with Paulie Police Car and Fiona Fire Engine from the TV-series Heroes of the City.
The Heroes of the City TV series is not yet available here in the country though. So, if you wish to get a glimpse of it, do check out their YouTube account or watch a trailer below.
Heroes of the City Baby is completely free, with no advertising and has no in-app purchases. It’s available for both Apple and Android devices too.
Everything in the app is designed for the youngest children. The app is easy to use, entertaining, educational and will inspire our children to be creative.
It includes the following:
- 3 animated short movies (Language: English and Swedish )
- Music Panel with two different themes
- Color and shape game
- Magic coloring game
- Balloon Game
When I told Ziggy that I was going to install a new Heroes of the City app on his tablet, he got really excited about it. He loves the characters especially Paulie Police Car and Fiona Fire Engine because he is obsessed with rescue vehicles.
As soon as you start the app, the standard Heroes of the City music plays. This is what you will see upon starting the app.
The first three icons from the top left corresponds to the 3 short movies. The fourth one on top give you the ability to play the movies one after another.
The icon from the left on the bottom part is for the Music Panel. Beside it is the icon for the Color and Shape Game. Beside that is the Magic Coloring Game icon while the right most one is for the Balloon Game. And as you can see, there’s an option to switch languages to either English or Swedish.
Animated Movies
Here is Ziggy watching one of the 3 short movies available in the app.
Ziggy enjoyed the movies like he does all the other ones he’s watched before from the original app and the DVD given to us. The main difference in this baby app is that the movies are more of introductions to the main characters only. The original Heroes of the City app had full episodes.
A typical episode from the original app lasts up to around 14 minutes long. However, in the Baby app, they only last for 1.5 minutes. I think that’s just right though for kids 2 years old and below. You have to have Internet connection to view them though. But just in case you think you’ll find yourself without a connection, make sure to take advantage of the option to download the movies to your device so that your child can view them any time and anywhere he wants.
Music Panel
Ziggy also tried the Music Panel. Being a child who’s always exposed to music in the house, he really liked this part of the app. It’s made like a keyboard/car dashboard and you can see the letters of the notes on the keys. Tapping the keys will produce a corresponding sound of course. It’s a nice way to start teaching a young child about letters. At the same time, it teaches the child about music appreciation too.
Another great about feature of this is that the child can choose whether he wants to hear the drum version, the keyboard version, the guitar version or a mix of two or three. The child can also pretend he’s driving by switching on the wipers or by starting or accelerating the engine.
Color and Shape Game
The Color and Shape game is something Ziggy finds very easy to do. At 3 years old he’s already familiar with a lot of colors and shapes. In this part of the app, the child will see two rows of shapes. He basically just has to match the colored shapes from the top by dragging them to the ones on the bottom row. Once he matches all the shapes right, fireworks explode which gives the child a sense of accomplishment.
Magic Coloring Game
Ziggy loves to doodle. He’s at that age now where he’s already learning how to draw. So, to encourage him to draw more, we installed a doodle board for him in his room. The Magic Coloring Game is a great alternative to that. It allows him to choose the colors that he wants to use. There are also options to draw with lines or with dots. If he thinks he made a mistake and wants to redo his work, there’s also an option to trash the present artwork and start on a blank slate. A great way to save on paper, if you ask me.
Balloon Game
What Ziggy loved most though is the Balloon Game. I think he loves this because for his age, this one is the most exciting. Here he is playing the game.
Several balloons with Heroes of the City characters on them come out one after the other. The object of the game is for the child to pop as may balloons as he can in order to win stars. Ziggy just loves winning and seeing how many stars he is able to get.
Overall, we really love this app. I think it’s great. You guys should try it out too. To download the app, please visit these links: App Store or Google Play.
