Is it possible to really do more with less?
That was the question we had to think about during Electrolux’s Do More With Less media launch at Abenson’s Bonifacio Global City last April 22, 2015.
The question was very apt because it was Earth Day that day. However, I think it’s a question that we all have to think about everyday.
We leared that day that Philippine households really produce so much waste. A study done by the Philippine Institute for Developmental Studies says that Metro Manila produces 5,600 tons of trash per day and 75% of this comes from households. It also showed that half of the daily household waste comprises food scraps and leftovers. A study conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation found that one of the reasons behind food wastage among developing countries is wasteful consumption habits.
Something clearly has to be done about this. So, Electrolux came up with the Do More With Less campaign to encourage households to reduce waste by recycling, upcycling and other means.
Andrea Pionilla, Marketing Manager of Electrolux, says that “Moms are inventive. Leave it to them to find a way to recycle something that seems unusable. Electrolux’s newest campaign wants to show moms how easy it is to do more with less when they have the right home appliances to help them out.”
That day, Electrolux brand ambassadors Cheska Garcia-Kramer, Chef Rosebud Benitez-Velasco and Chef Bruce Lim, all shared how Electrolux appliances have helped them reduce waste in their respective households.
The event also welcomed the newest ambassador, professional basketball player and hands-on dad, Doug Kramer, who couldn’t make it that day but sent his message through a video. He said “I love how Electrolux appliances help us accomplish more things at home so Cheska and I can spend more time with the kids and less time managing the household.”
The event, hosted by Issa Litton, was such a fun one. Aside from the really yummy buffet spread by Bizu, the guests were given a chance to win some prizes by participating in a really cool game.
We were asked to form groups for the Upcycle Me challenge. I partnered with my co-mom bloggers from Mommy Bloggers Philippines along with a couple of other guests. Each group must come up with something made from the scraps or simple materials provided. This is what our group came up with.
It’s a piggy bank made of plastic bottles, tape, rubber band and cloth. We figured it would be cool to have a piggy bank that has three separate compartments to make it easy to segregate coins. It would be a great way too to teach our kids about money.
The other groups did a great job with their projects too but I guess ours was the best because we won! Yay!
This event was such a great reminder for all of us that we can all do our part in saving the environment by reducing waste. At home, we aim to reduce waste all the time. Some of the things we do include the following:
- We cook only enough for all of us to consume in one sitting.
- If there are leftovers, we serve them during the next meal.
- We only buy vegetables good for 2-3 days to avoid getting them spoiled.
- This summer, we let all three kids sleep in our room because ours is the only one with air conditioner. It saves additional electricity costs because nobody is using any other appliances in the other rooms.
- We recycle bottles and plastic containers.
- We hardly buy garbage bags because we reuse plastic grocery bags instead.
- Our kids use hand-me-down clothes when they are available.
These are only some of the things we do to do more with less at home. How about you guys?

Before I throw something away I take a second look and ask myself if it really needs to go or whether it can still be reused. One example are toilet paper rolls. I made a little pipeline out of it and my daughter puts in these little pom-poms and watches it go in and waits for it at the other end of the pipeline. I also reuse my husband’s old documents and let my daughter draw on the other side. After we draw on it sometimes we turn it into paper airplanes or, well, throw it away.

I love the pipeline idea! 🙂 We reuse used paper too. Normally, my son writes or draws on them. 🙂
