Putting your basement to better use by renovating it can give your family home space, functionality and additional value. It’s a room that many people overlook but your basement probably has more potential that you realize. You could turn it into a home office, a gym or even a cinema room. Or it could be an additional living space or guest bedroom. The possibilities are endless and renovating could put this space to much better use. Before you begin, read these top tips to ensure your basement transformation goes as smoothly as possible.

Make sure your basement is dry

The first thing you need to do before starting your renovation is to make sure your basement is completely dry. Check the basement walls and ceiling for any cracks or visible signs of moisture and water. If you’ve only recently moved in, also check to see if your home has had problems with a basement flood in the past. Doing this will help you work towards getting these issues fixed before you start renovating. Ignoring and covering up these issues without addressing them can cause damp and mould to develop in your basement. Which can be incredibly costly to put right. So ensure that every inch of your basement is as dry as a bone before you begin.

Check the height of your ceiling

As well as making sure your ceiling is free from cracks and moisture; you also need to make sure it is at a suitable height. If you basement has not been purpose built for a living space, the ceiling height might be lower than in your other rooms. You may also find that pipes, beams and wiring could also be reducing your vertical space. To make it more suitable for living in you could make the floor of your basement deeper by digging down. Or you could have your pipes and wiring relocated to maximize the space. Both of these will cost money so you may have consider this additional cost when deciding upon your renovation budget.

Choose its purpose carefully

There is little point spending money on a basement renovation if it’s purpose is not useful in some way. For instance, if you want to use your basement for an office but you already have one upstairs, it’s likely you won’t have a need for it. Or if you want to create a chill out area for your kids but know they are moving out soon then the space won’t be used to it’s full potential. Think long and hard about what your home could be lacking. If you’ve just moved in, maybe you could benefit from an extra bedroom. Or if you’re struggling for space in your kitchen, your basement could become a useful utility room.  Having a clear idea of its purpose early on will make it easier to determine which elements you need to include.
