Halloween is one of the most favorite occasions in our family. The kids spend weeks planning for their Halloween costumes while I spend a considerable amount of time trying to find venues that offer fun Halloween activities for the whole family. One of our most favorite Halloween activities is, of course, Trick-or-Treating! It’s a lot of fun going around with the kids, helping them get candy after candy after candy. Of course, while it’s fun, it’s also a cause for concern because I have to try and limit their intake of sweets too.
Well, it’s good to know that there is apparently a better alternative. For the past 62 years, UNICEF has spearheaded one of the longest-running youth volunteer initiatives in America called Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has helped motivate kids to become active global citizens while teaching the fundamental value of helping others. They do this by encouraging kids of all ages to help raise funds for other kids in developing countries by going door-to-door on Halloween night or participating in other festive fundraising activities. So far, more than $167 million has been raised which has helped provide children in 190 countries and territories with much-needed health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more. Such a great accomplishment, right?
This year, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has returned with a new look with six new Halloween characters featured on individual collection boxes. The new design encourages children to express their support through choice. The new designs include Patches, Bertha DeBroom, Count Change-ula, Shadow, Lady Pennyworth and Frank.
This is such a cool thing to be part of this Halloween. I just wish this is available for us here too. If you’re in the U.S., this is a great chance for you to teach your kids that they can do their part in helping change the world too. Kids these days have to realize that there are others out there who do not have the same privileges they enjoy. They have to know that they have the ability to help and that they don’t have to be an adult in order to change someone’s life. So, I highly encourage you to take part in this worthwhile effort if you can. Let all children in the world have a Happy Halloween.
