If not for an email reminder I got from LinkedIn, I wouldn’t have remembered that I’m celebrating my second anniversary as a freelance writer and as a WAHM this month. Hooray!

Time really flies by so fast. Two years ago, I was just trying out the WAHM lifestyle, unsure if it was going to work out. The only work-at-home jobs I knew I could do well involved writing and social media. I didn’t even know how to start finding clients until a fellow blogger (and now a good friend of mine as well) took a chance on me and hired me for a ghostwriting job.

As a mom of three kids already during that time, deciding to try and chase my dream of becoming a writer was a HUGE leap of faith, which is why this quote for the week (from no less than Steve Jobs!) really resonates with me.

QuoteoftheDay_Steve Jobs

Becoming a freelancer is no walk in the park especially in the beginning. There’s no fixed monthly income. The people you get to work with will vary. There will be times when you’ll be hectic with so many clients and times when you’ll have none. And the thought that I might not be a good enough writer to make it was always at the back of my mind.

Besides, I was groomed to grow in the corporate world. I took my MBA so that I can work my way up successfully in the corporate ladder. People had certain expectations about which path I should take. But, I knew in my heart even then that the corporate world wasn’t my path. Still I was so scared to take the leap.

But, oh my gosh, the leap was so worth it. I’ve experienced and learned so much in the past two years. I’m earning and I’m having fun too! Β I get to do what I love and spend a lot of time with my family as well. I may not be financially rich yet at this point but I believe all that will come in due time because I’m passionate with what I’m doing. For now, I’m just happy that I get to call myself a WRITER.

I have so many goals as a writer and I’m slowly but surely achieving them one by one. The biggest goal I’ve achieved so far this year was being hired as a Contributing Writer for The Asian Parent Philippines. Just take a look at my calling card! Hahaha!

I know I still have so much to learn and so much to write. It’s a super scary ride. I’m afraid to fail. I still have doubts about my abilities some times. But I’m putting my all into this.

Coz in the end I can’t not do what I’m called to do. This is exactly what I wanted to become – a writer. I’m no longer just chasing the dream but living it and I LOVE it!

  9. i have so many dreams but i have been putting them down my priority list due to more urgent needs. however, the dreams i have creeps into my mind during the most quiet times of my day… i have to give some of those dreams a go before they get lost in the chaos of my everyday life… thanks for the reminder and happy 2nd anniversary! πŸ˜€

    1. Hi Liz. I so understand you. The urgent needs really have to take priority. It’s so easy to do that though that we end up burying our heart’s deepest desires. But I believe that if you really want it bad enough, you’ll be able to find a way to achieve it. Good luck to you! πŸ™‚

  16. happy anniversary mommy janice! πŸ™‚ anyways, i agree with your quote of the week, i have suffered through the pains of trying to live your life according to someone elses standards and it was tiring and hard, it just came to a point that i said to myself, enough is enough, my life, my rules – my circus, my monkeys so here I am with much much less drama to deal with! thanks for sharing this! πŸ™‚

    1. Exactly, Nhessie! You only get to live your life. Plus, life is short, so I say take chances and make that leap while you still can. πŸ™‚

  17. Thanks for this inspiring post. To tell you the truth, I have a lot of dreams that I haven’t fulfilled until now, probably because I let other people and things drown them. And also, I’m scared of failing… and of people criticizing/judging me because of my failure. Your post inspires me to spread my wings. Thank you for this. πŸ™‚

  23. Hi, Mommy Janice!

I work as an IT professional and while wrangling codes can be fun at times, it’s also full of pressure. I’m really looking into escaping the corporate world maybe this year (cross fingers). I actually have some freelance writing experience back in college but it has been a while since I’ve done that. I never got to take that much work load enough to be able to replace my daytime job.

I really love this quote and I hope you share more tips on starting out as a freelancer.

    1. Hi, Pam! Thanks for visiting. πŸ™‚

If you’re really serious about going freelance, I suggest you do it slowly. Maybe you can start by accepting some projects while you’re still working full time. That way, you can save up first and transition slowly. I didn’t have that option when I decided to freelance because my third pregnancy forced me to resign from my full time job. Freelancing just sort of fell on my lap. πŸ™‚

I do share my WAHM stories and lessons here on the blog, once in a while. So, I hope you check the site every so often. Good luck on your transition! πŸ™‚ I’m just an email away if you have questions. πŸ™‚
