Women empowerment has been an advocacy of mine for the last several years. I believe that women do so much already for their families, friends, workplace and community. Unfortunately, not all women are able to realize their full potential because of some barriers they have to face in life, such as lack of education and no access to resources, among others. So, when I heard about this campaign by Coca-Cola that supports women empowerment, you bet I went ahead and decided to support it.

We all know that Coca-Cola is the most popular and biggest-selling soft drink in history. Aside from that, it is also the best-known brand in the world. It’s nice to know that they have decided to do their part and give back to the world by helping the people who they consider to be the pillars of their business, which in the Philippines are the hardworking women sari-sari store owners.

Empowering women, improving lives.

In 2010, Coca-Cola launched the 5by20 campaign with the goal of empowering 5 million micro-entrepreneurs by the year 2020. They recognize women around the world, from fruit farmers to artisans to vendors, as the pillars of their business.

Through 5by20, the company aims to address the most common barriers to success that women face by giving them access to business skills training courses, financial services and connections with peers or mentors.

Through the STAR (Sari-Sari Store Training & Access to Resources) program, Coca-Cola works with TESDA and other agencies to teach women sari-sari store owners valuable skills such as recording and inventory, organizing merchandise in the store, cleanliness, customer service, conducting background/credit checks on customers and calculating mark-up on products.

It gives me great joy to see how a brand that I support is helping millions of women to improve their lives. Be inspired too by watching this video of theirs, which shows Coca-Cola’s belief that when a woman owns a business, no matter how small, it’s not only her and her family who benefits, but also the whole community. Because when a woman owns a business, you can count on them to open happiness.
