If you have been following my planner IG,  @planningforpleasure , you’ve undoubtedly seen my posts about the system I’m currently using as a planner, notebook and journal in one. It’s called a Shutterdori, which is a local and cheaper version of a Midori. If you don’t know what that is, let me tell you all about that first.

The Midori is actually a Japanese brand of traveler’s notebooks that has been around since the 1950s. They created traveler’s notebooks for “all travelers who have a free spirit”.

A Midori is actually made of cowhide leather cover that is tanned and cut. It has elastic bands strategically placed through holes on the leather. These bands are what holds the notebook inserts in place. Midoris can hold 3 – 4 inserts but I’ve seen others hold more than that.

Midoris are available in two sizes – standard/regular size and passport size.

Here’s how the original Midoris look like.

The great thing about the system is that it is very handy, which means you can easily bring it with you to document your travels. You can also remove your used inserts and replace them with new ones without the need to replace the cover.

People though have found other ways of using the Midori. Aside from documenting trips, they are now also used as planners, journals and scrapbooks. They are actually very popular in the planner or journal communities around the world.

The thing is though, Midoris can be very expensive. So, over the years, some very enterprising people though of making cheaper versions, dubbed as Fauxdoris. Some of them are also made of leather but a lot also use faux leather, synthetic leather, cloth , plastic or even paper.

My Shutterdori is a fauxdori. Now, you get it?

Anyway, before I got my Shutterdori, I was using a ring planner, the one given to me by Planners and Journals (PNJ). While I really loved it, I eventually found myself wanting more space to write and discovered that I can actually make a planner out of a fauxdori. I loved the concept of it and thought that I can totally go ringless. I’m now planning to use my PNJ planner for something else.

So, I searched high and low for a fauxdori from local and foreign suppliers and found Shutter Creations PH, the maker of my Shutterdori.

Shutter Creations PH is a local fauxdori supplier. They have fauxdoris in all sizes – standard, pocket and A5. They are available in all sorts of colors and designs. They also have various notebook insert designs. Some use plain paper but you can also have them in grid or dotted too.

Here are pics of some of their products.

What I like about them is that they can be customized according to your preferences. Because I wanted a lot of space to write on, I chose the A5 size. Plus, I had them customize it to a Wide version so that I can put it as many notebooks, folders and stuff in it. I also chose their Pretty Pinks version because pink is one of my fave colors. Anyway, here’s what it looked like when it was delivered to me. I really love the color! The material, though not real leather, looks really nice and is really smooth.

I ordered two inserts along with the cover but Shutter Creations gave me another one for free. Here’s what they look like.

Now a lot of fauxdori owners usually like adding embellishments and one of the popular ones involves threading charms on the elastic that holds the cover in place. I used this star charm of mine that was actually from an old necklace that I don’t wear anymore. I thought it would go nicely with the color of my shutterdori.

Eventually I also added a DIY bookmark and a charm on the spine of the shutterdori.

I also made my own kraft folder and placed it in the shutterdori.

Now, it’s becoming thicker and I love it!

You might wonder what I need 3 inserts for though. Well, the first one I use as a DIY planner. The second one is what I use for my business planning. The third was what I used as my journal for the Listers Gotta List challenge for August. Here are some of the planner layouts I’ve designed so far.

Here’s a sample page that I made for the Listers Gotta List challenge.

As you can see, there really is a lot of space to write. I love that the weekly spread allows me to see everything I need to do for the week. An A5 size fauxdori or planner may be too big for others but it works perfectly for me. Besides, I usually bring big bags so I’m always able to fit in my shutterdori without any problems at all.

If there’s anything I’d like to change about this shutterdori, I’d add in a pen loop as well. I also prefer thicker paper on my notebook inserts. But aside from these, I’m pretty happy with this purchase.

  16. oh my! how lovely! I want one too 🙂 Honestly, there are a lot of apps that could help me “organize” everything, but nothing beats an actual planner. And this particular planner’s too girly! I love it!

  17. Never quite considered embellishing planners, but it can be a great show of personality! For me I don’t like too girly planners because they are too cluttered
