One of the most popular parenting buzz words we’ve heard in recent years is “Proactive Parenting”. I was able to learn more about it when I was invited to attend an event organized by Hi-Precision Diagnostics last July 27 at Chef Jessie at the Rockwell Club.

HiPrecision1

For those of you not familiar with Hi-Precision Diagnostics, here’s a little info about them.

Hi-Precision Diagnostics (HPD) is dedicated to providing the highest quality laboratory services, giving its patients proper and accurate information which may have a significant effect on their way of life.

With close to two decades of experience, HPD offers the largest network of medical examination and diagnostic facilities in the Philippines. It has over 20 branches in Manila and Cebu with a workforce of more than a thousand. Hi-Precision is ISO 9001:2008 Certified while its headquarters are accredited with PNS ISO 15189:2010.

HiPrecision4

Hi-Precision Diagnostics offers a comprehensive range of medical tests, some of which are not available anywhere else in the country. Its laboratory exams are fully automated, decreasing the risk of human error. It is the first medical laboratory in the country to give its patients online access to their laboratory results in a secure platform. They even have an app available for both OSX and Android phones. Plus, they offer Home Service as well to individuals who may be too weak to travel to any of its branches.

During the event, a few experts shared with us important information about proactive parenting and how Hi-Precision Diagnostics can help us parents make proactive decisions for ourselves and our family.

According to registered family psychologist, Michelle S. Alignay, MA, RP, RGC, Proactive Parenting “is developing a RESPONSIVE rather than a REACTIVE mindset.” She said that being a proactive parent means anticipating possibilities, being mindful and responding well to realities.

Dr. Alignay further shares that as parents there are Matters of Chance that are just presented to us, such as our baby’s looks, personality, learning style and intelligence. She said that “we can’t change matters of chance but that we can choose to proactively respond on how we adjust to it.”

There are also Matters of Choice. This means that as parents we have the capability to choose to develop a proactive mindset, educate ourselves, be decisive and live with the kind of parenting and family life we want. This can even start even before we give birth, right when we become pregnant.

When we get pregnant, we usually go through a series of prenatal tests to ensure the health and well-being of our unborn child. However, according to Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Maria Niza Bermudez-Reyes, MD., FPOGS, FPSMFM, FPSUOG, the regular prenatal tests we get can not really provide prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities or trisonomies. This often causes parents to be unprepared for whatever challenges these abnormalities might bring to their child and to their family.

Thankfully though, Hi-Precision Diagnostics has recently launched the Panorama Prenatal Screen.

HiPrecision2

Hi-Precision Diagnostics’ Panorama™ Prenatal Screen is a non-invasive DNA screening test, which gives essential genetic information about your baby as early as nine weeks into your pregnancy. By knowing the state of your child’s health and gender as early as possible, you can better prepare for your child’s future.

By providing a sample of your blood, you will not only know your baby’s gender, you will also find out his likelihood of having a chromosomal condition. Babies born to mothers over 35 years old have a higher chance of having certain chromosomal abnormalities such as Down Syndrome and Angelman Syndrome. BUT, take note that certain biological conditions affect women of all ages. A screen test can help determine your baby’s risk of being affected with a specific chromosome condition regardless of age, family issues, or medical history.

Panorama is a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT), which may be done in a single in-office visit. As you will not be exposed to any extraneous elements, it is absolutely safe for you and your baby. Some of your baby’s DNA actually crosses into your bloodstream during pregnancy. Panorama Prenatal Screen is the only screen test which can distinguish between fetal and maternal DNA, so that Hi-Precision Diagnostics’ laboratory specialists can analyze your baby’s DNA using your blood.

Now you might ask, “Why Panorama and not other Non-Invasive Prenatal Tests?”

Different NIPT methods are used by different companies but Panorama is better than these other tests because:

  • it has the lowest chance of false negatives and false positives,
  • it detects more cases of microdeletion syndromes,
  • it uniquely detects Triploidy,
  • it has a 100% accuracy for fetal gender in clinical studies,
  • it has been validated and performances are published in top scientific journals.

With Panorama Prenatal Screen, you will be given informative reports which will allow you to decide on your next course of action for the future health and well-being of your baby.

I don’t know about you but I think as a mom, I’d do whatever I can to make sure that my unborn baby is safe and healthy. Although I don’t think any parent can be 100% prepared, I think we should be responsible enough to prepare ourselves to handle whatever challenges may come our way, right? That’s what being a proactive parent is all about.

  1. This is really nice. Technology really has come a long way. I used Hi Precision Diagnostics for all my ultrasounds when I was pregnant with my daughter. My Ob-Gyn highly recommended them (good results, nice sonologists and cheaper than the hospital). I’ll definite continue to patronize their services if I ever get pregnant with another kid again. Thanks for sharing!

  3. It great that we have this kind of technology now in Philippines. If you ask me if I want to know my baby’s condition, I’m not 100 % sure yet if I want to. Like other parents who don’t want to know the gender until that day comes, sometimes, we don’t really want to learn everything at once. =) Although, I agree that it could really help to be a prepared mom. =)

  5. Hi-Precision Diagnostics really has superb services in affordable prices. I go there for my ultrasounds before. May I ask if the Panorama Prenatal Screen detects autism and other abnormalities? My son is 2yo and he was diagnosed with ASD just recently.

  7. I’m not a mom but I see the importance and know how important it is for a mom to really take care of herself during pregnancy. I like what the doctor said about being prepared and anticipating possibilities. I guess that’s one of the crucial characteristics that each mom should have and that’s why it’s important to be religious with all the pre-natal requirements. More importantly, these should be done with a group that can be trusted, like Hi-Precision.

  8. Our HMO partners with Hi-Precision Diagnostics. We have our checkups by them annually. Kaya lang, one time, when your child is sick, the pedia requires another set of test from the hospital itself.
